Treasurer, Ben Bouza
My wife, Emma, and I have two girls Norah (7) and Ruby (5 w/ Ds). I am a high school math teacher and the Athletic Director at West Sioux High School in Hawarden, IA. This is my second year serving as treasurer for New Directions. I enjoy being part of the board because it allows me to take on an active role in our group. Emma and I have also enjoyed attending the National Down Syndrome Congress Convention as a family the last 4 years. It has been a great opportunity for us to learn and meet people in the Down syndrome community.
Secretary, Carrie Roberts
My name is Carrie Roberts. I’m originally from the suburbs of St. Louis, MO. My husband, Darrin, is from Washington state. We’ve lived a little all over–Utah, Missouri, Nebraska, Mississippi, Iowa, Illinois and life has just recently brought us to Brandon, SD. We are excited to be here and to get to call South Dakota our home. We have four children–two boys (ages 12 and 10) and two girls (ages 7 and 3). Our oldest daughter, Anna, changed our lives when we found out prenatally that she would have Down syndrome. We are so very grateful to have her and feel blessed to be part of the Down syndrome family. In all of our moves, it has been amazing to have this incredible network and support that makes the Down syndrome community thrive. As for me personally, I have a background in Social Work and I used to work with children and teenagers with mental health problems. Nowadays, though, I am a stay-at-home mom with a hobby-job of teaching a cardio-dance-fitness class called WERQ. There is nothing quite like turning up the music, turning off the world, and dancing your stress away! As a family, we love to be outdoors–camping, swimming, playing football, and having backyard barbecues. We travel as much as we possibly can; most of our children have already visited more than 30 states! I firmly believe you can find beauty everywhere and I want to see it all with my family. I look forward to getting to know each of you and advocating for our friends and family members with Down syndrome!

Buddy Walk Co-Director, Laura McNaughton
I currently serve as the Chief of Staff in the President’s office at the University of South Dakota and recently received a master’s degree in Social Work. I am so excited to serve on the New Directions Board as the Director of the Buddy Walk. My niece Violet, in the picture above, brightens our family every day. She is a busy three year old who loves to dance. I look forward to meeting other families who have been touched by Down syndrome and sharing my talents with this community.

Regional Conference Director, Kris Pappas
My name is Kris Pappas. My husband, Brett and I live in Brandon, SD. I have a 14 year old step-daughter, Carson, a 9 year old daughter, Haley and 3 years ago in August, Miss Abigail (Abbi) blessed our lives! I am a special education teacher in the Brandon School District and Brett works at the Flandreau Indian School. Abbi’s diagnosis was prenatal. Although our journey is really just starting with Abbi, it’s already been a roller coaster ride, as well as a blessing. We couldn’t picture our lives without her! I am excited to be part of New Directions and look forward to getting to know you!
The New Directions Board meets once a month on a weekday evening for approximately 90 minutes for discussion, and to conduct organizational business. All Board Members are volunteers who donate their time and talents to serve our membership.
